For a BBQ tofu recipe that maximizes on flavor, look no further than these smoky bbq tofu steaks that make for the perfect vegetarian barbecue meal!

The key to maximizing the flavor in your bbq tofu recipe is to get as much into it during the marinade process. This involves two crucial steps. First, the tofu has to be pressed to remove excess moisture, which will allow it to soak up as much marinade as possible when cut into thick slabs.

Second, the marinade has to be packed with flavor. This one delivers with a base of Lee Kum Kee Hoisin Sauce and Smoky BBQ Flavored Sriracha Sauce, which combine to add sweet, smoky, spicy, and umami notes throughout the tofu steaks. The marinade also caramelizes as the tofu chars, further intensifying the flavors. Finished with a drizzle of Chili Crisp Hot Honey, and this tofu recipe is hearty and flavorful enough to make it into your summer barbecue lineup! Try it with a side of coleslaw for a refreshing and crunchy sidekick.

How to make it

  1. Remove tofu from packaging and drain. Wrap the block in paper towels or a clean kitchen towel, then place on a plate. Set a flat surface (like a cutting board) on top and weigh it down with a heavy skillet or use a tofu press. Let press for at least 10–15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then slice into 1-inch thick slabs.

  2. In a bowl, whisk together Lee Kum Kee Hoisin Sauce, Lee Kum Kee Smoky BBQ Sriracha Sauce, Lee Kum Kee Premium Soy Sauce, olive oil, and Lee Kum Kee Minced Garlic. Coat the tofu slabs evenly and let marinate for at least 10 minutes.

  3. Heat a nonstick or cast iron pan over medium heat and add neutral oil. Sear the tofu for 4–5 minutes per side until golden and slightly charred. Brush additional marinade over the tofu while cooking, allowing it to caramelize into a glossy glaze.

  4. Transfer tofu to a serving plate and spoon any remaining glaze from the pan over the top.

  5. Finish with a drizzle of Lee Kum Kee Chili Crisp Hot Honey, then garnish with sesame seeds and chives. Serve with coleslaw and enjoy!
