Fans of Korean food will tell you there’s something addictive about street food made with garaetteok, or Korean rice cakes. The complexity of the sweet-spicy sauce with peanuts, sesame, and garlic makes it hard to believe that this Korean rice cake skewers recipe is so simple to make.
Why We Love It
The flavor profile of the spicy sauce mix is vibrant yet comforting, with heat from the Lee Kum Kee Sriracha Chili Sauce and sweetness from the ketchup, honey, and brown sugar. You also get the perfect combination of sesame oil, minced garlic, and crushed peanuts with every bite. Added to the chewy texture of the Korean rice cake skewers, or garaetteok, you get a one-of-a-kind treat. Plus, with premade garaetteok, you can cook this up in 20 minutes or less.
Blanch the rice cakes in hot boiling water for about 30 seconds to soften them. Drain and run under cold tap water then pat the rice cakes dry. (If rice cakes are fresh, skip this step.)
In a small saucepan, add all sauce mix ingredients and cook for 20-30 seconds to dissolve the sugar and honey, stirring constantly until thickened.
Place the rice cakes on skewers.
Heat a large pan over medium-high heat and add some cooking oil. Add skewers and cook both sides of the rice cakes for about 1 minute each. Remove and brush the sauce on both sides of the rice cakes.
Garnish with crushed nuts and serve warm or cooled to room temperature. Enjoy!
