A classic holiday mac and cheese recipe gets a sweet and savory twist with caramelized onions and a secret ingredient: hoisin sauce!

The two are combined to make one flavor-packed ingredient in this recipe: Hoisin Caramelized Onions. With Lee Kum Kee Hoisin Sauce acting as a savory and deep accent to the sweetness of the caramelized onions, the two combine to give extra richness to a holiday favorite.

Within the mac and cheese are cheeses that complement the hoisin caramelized onions naturally. Gruyere cheese provides a sharp nuttiness that counter balances some of the sweetness, while cheddar adds a tang and a little more savory flavor that connects the cheese sauce and caramelized onions together. This is recipe is great as a twist on a Friendsgiving or holiday favorite, especially when paired with Sriracha Chili Saucefor a kick of garlicky heat!

How to make it

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Preheat oven to 375°F. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and salt and cook for 8–10 minutes, until softened. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for another 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown. Stir in Lee Kum Kee Hoisin Sauce and cook for 2 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the bechamel base for the cheese sauce: Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in milk and cook for 2–3 minutes, until slightly thickened.
  3. Stir in cheeses: Reduce heat to low and stir in gruyère, cheddar, and black pepper until smooth.
  4. Combine and assemble: Stir macaroni and most of the caramelized onions into the cheese sauce. Transfer to a baking dish and top with the remaining caramelized onions and panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Bake and Serve: Bake for 15–20 minutes, until golden and bubbling. Let cool for 5 minutes, then drizzle with Lee Kum Kee Sriracha Chili Sauce and garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
