This BBQ Ribs recipe featured a Char Siu inspired Chinese bbq sauce that combines tailgate tradition with the New Year celebration!

Char siu is one of the quintessential Chinese barbecue flavors. It's sweet, savory, and umami packed flavor comes from ingredients like Lee Kum Kee Hoisin Sauce and Panda Brand Oyster Flavored Sauce, both of which work perfectly with the fatty and rich pork ribs common in American barbecue. Add in the rich sweetness of classic American barbecue sauce, and you have a recipe that's perfect for the grill or smoker!

What You Will Need

Made with
Lee Kum Kee products

How to make it

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the Lee Kum Kee Minced Garlic, brown sugar, salt, ketchup, Lee Kum Kee Panda Brand Oyster Flavored Sauce, Lee Kum Kee Hoisin Sauce, Shaoxing wine, pineapple juice, five spice powder, and white pepper. Set aside 3 Tbsp of this marinade in a small bowl for glazing later.
  2. Before marinating, check the bone side of the ribs and remove the silver skin membrane if it is still attached. Place the rack of ribs on a sheet pan and rub all remaining marinade over the ribs until fully coated. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight for maximum flavor.

  3. When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with heavy-duty foil and set a metal rack on top. Place the ribs bone-side up on the rack. Pour 1 cup hot water into the foil-lined pan beneath the rack and roast for 30 minutes.
  4. Warm the reserved 3 Tbsp marinade with the honey in the microwave or a small saucepan until smooth. Carefully flip the ribs, add another thin layer of hot water to the pan if needed, and roast 30 minutes more. Then cover the entire pan tightly with foil and continue roasting 30–45 minutes (30 minutes for a firmer bite, 45 minutes for more tender ribs).
  5. Remove the foil, baste both sides of the ribs generously with the honey glaze, and roast for 10 minutes. Repeat basting and roast a final 10 minutes until glossy, lacquered, and deeply caramelized. Rest 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
